Supergirl has tapped Floriana Lima for the series regular role of Maggie Sawyer.
The character is described as a detective for the National City Police Department who takes a special interest in the cases involving aliens.
Maggie Sawyer was first introduced in 1987 as captain of the Metropolis Special Crimes Unit where she was a highly skilled member of the Science Police, a division of the police department that deals with metahumans.
She was also revealed to be a lesbian in later Superman books, making her one of the first openly gay characters in mainstream comic books. She later went on to become romantically involved with Batwoman and would go on to appear in several Batman titles.
Floriana Lima is the latest addition to the cast of Supergirl, which moves to The CW for its second season. Additional newcomers include former Wonder Woman Lynda Carter as the president of the United States, Tyler Hoechlin as Superman and Ian Gomez as Snapper Carr.
Supergirl returns Monday, October 10th at 8pm.
