With the 30th anniversary of James Cameron's Aliens mere weeks away, actress Sigourney Weaver has been discussing the iconic sequel with Hollywood trade Entertainment Weekly. As such, it really comes as no surprise that talk eventually shifted to Neill Blomkamp’s Alien 5, which will serve as a direct sequel to the 1986 entry.
The movie was recently delayed as Ridley Scott makes Alien: Covenant, which will arrive in theatres next August. The director has plans for additional Alien prequels as well so, for the time being, Blomkamp's movie is sitting on the sidelines.
However, the project is still very much alive and Weaver was kind enough to share some more plot details surrounding the highly anticipated Sci-Fi sequel.
“It’s just as if, you know, the path forks and one direction goes off to three and four and another direction goes off to Neill’s movie,” she said. This appears to confirm earlier rumors that this new movie will ignore the events of Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection - which is just fine with us.
We've seen plenty of concept art for the film over the last year, which features the return of not only Ellen Ripley, but also fan-favorite Colonial Marine Dwayne Hicks and a very grown up Rebecca Newt Jordan. Many fans were disappointed by the deaths of these characters at the outset of Alien 3, but it looks as though Blomkamp is indeed looking to rectify these things with his movie.
Alien 5 does not have a release date yet, but it's great to hear things are still moving forward.
