The future holds a major change for Ellen Ripley's past.
Last week, following word of a planned Aliens 30th Anniversary reunion at San Diego Comic Con, actress Sigourney Weaver spoke about plans for a fifth instalment of the iconic franchise, confirming it would pick up after the events of James Cameron's movie and ignore the events of both Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection respectively.
The film, to be directed by Neill Blomkamp, the film is currently on hold at Fox until Ridley Scott finishes his Prometheus sequel Alien: Covenant. Despite this, the movie is very much alive at the studio and Weaver is deeply committed to the film.
Speaking of Ripley's next appearance with Entertainment Weekly, Weaver revealed: “Well, we have a great script. Fox asked us to delay so Ridley Scott could shoot his [second] Prometheus movie. That was too bad because we would have already done it by now.”
She adds: "It’s a great story and it’s satisfying to me to give this woman an ending.”
This certainly makes it sound as though this will be Ripley's last appearance in the franchise, however, we're guessing her fate will be somewhat different than what we've seen up until this point.
Weaver also suggested Blomkamp’s Aliens sequel will delve into the motivation of the aliens themselves, exploring what it is their race has been seeking. “The script itself has so much in it that’s so original, but also really satisfies the, I would say, the primal needs of the aliens,” Weaver says. “It’s a tribute to all of the great work that the other directors have done, in a way, but goes in a completely new direction. I hope we’ll do it.”
Fans have been eager to see Neill Blomkamp's Aliens sequel since the first pieces of concept art, also featuring the return of Cpl. Dwayne Hicks and Rebecca Newt Jordan, surfaced online.
So, while the film sits off to the side, Weaver wants to assure fans "...it will be worth the wait when we finally get to it.”
For those looking forward to seeing that story realized in a few years, Weaver has additional encouraging words for all of you.
“I hope it won’t be a few. I hope it’ll be a couple. But we’ll see. Yeah.”
