Simon McQuoid has entered talks to direct the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot for New Line.
Aquaman director James Wan is producing the project alongside Michael Clear, Todd Garner and Jeremy Stein. Lawrence Kasanoff is executive producing and Greg Russo penned the most recent script for the film.
Based around the ’90s arcade game, Mortal Kombat continues to be one of the most successful video game franchises in history. The games are developed by NetherRealm Studios, owned by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, with a team led by co-creator and creative director Ed Boon.
Alien vs. Predator director Paul W.S. Anderson helmed the first Mortal Kombat film back in 1995. It would gross $122-Million globally, however the series would end up begin shelved after the sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, bombed at the box office in the Fall of 1997.
McQuoid is an Australian filmmaker and one of the most in-demand commercials directors in the business, working on high-profile campaigns for PlayStation, Halo, Range Rover, Beats by Dre, and other top brands. His work has earned him a Grand Clio, a D&AD Pencil, and a GRANDY Award, among others.
Could he be the one to successfully breath new life into a Mortal Kombat film franchise?
