Fans were over the moon earlier this week when it was announced that Marvel was planning a brand new television show based around The Inhumans for 2017. This new show would would focus on the likes of Black Bolt and his Royal Family instead of spinning off of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., which has touched on the existence of Inhumans since last season.
Originally, a movie version of The Inhumans was planned as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was supposed to be released in 2018, but was then pushed to 2019 before being completely removed from the studio release schedule earlier this year. Now, although action star Vin Diesel has been teasing his involvement in The Inhumans as Black Bolt for some time now, it seems likely that he won't be taking up the role in the upcoming television show.
During a recent Facebook Q&A, director James Gunn was asked if Diesel would be pulling double duty within the MCU - portraying Black Bolt in The Inhumans show, and voicing Groot in Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2. Gunn told fans that, with the property now headed to TV, they shouldn't expect to see Diesel on the new show.
“The Inhumans is going to be a TV show. Unless Vin wants to take a huge pay cut and sign up to do a TV show it seems unlikely.”
This is saddening, but not that surprising.
While we'd love to have seen Diesel in the role of Black Bolt, we're sure that Marvel Television and ABC are more than capable of casting an appropriate actor for the role.
