The Force is strong with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
The highly anticipated Gareth Edwards prequel brought in $71.1-Million on Friday and will most likely end its first weekend with a very nice $150-Million here in North America.
The movie will easily post the second best December opening in box office history, coming in behind last year's Star Wars: The Force Awakens. That film, directed by J.J. Abrams, shattered records in 2015 when it bowed to a monstrous $247.9-Million in 2015. Prior to this, no December event film, including James Cameron's Avatar, had launched north of $85-Million.
The movie is opening in most major film markets this weekend - with the exception of China and North Korea - and has brought in an additional $33-Million throughout Wednesday and Thursday.
Set before the events of 1977's Star Wars: A New Hope, the latest film follows a group of Rebel Alliance operatives as they attempt to steal the plans to the Empire's Death Star battle station.
Starring Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Riz Ahmed and Alan Tudyk, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is playing in theatres now.
