Some huge news has broke tonight, Star Trek fans!
Sonequa Martin-Green of The Walking Dead has been cast as the lead in the upcoming CBS series Star Trek: Discovery, the first new Trek series in over a decade.
While the network has offered no comment on the casting, we do know that Sonequa Martin-Green will portray a lieutenant commander on the U.S.S. Discovery. Additionally, despite her recent casting, the actress will continue to serve as a series regular on The Walking Dead.
Martin-Green represents the first African-American woman to lead the cast of a Trek ensemble, fulfilling a years-long goal by the project’s original showrunner Bryan Fuller.
The actress joins a cast that also includes the likes of Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Michelle Yeoh, Chris Obi, Shazad Latif, and Mary Chieffo.
The series is currently set to premiere on CBS in May, with all subsequent episodes streaming exclusively in the U.S. on digital service CBS All Access. Those outside of the country will be able to catch Star Trek: Discovery on additional streaming services, like Netflix, beginning in May.
