ABC's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. had no plans to bring back Bill Paxton.
The actor, who passed away on Sunday following complications from surgery, appeared in six episodes of the show's freshman season as John Garrett. The character was a longtime agent of the top secret organization who also served as a mentor to Brett Dalton's Agent Ward.
Later revealed to be a member of Hydra, Garrett was able to access classified intel before being killed off in the Season 1 finale of the hit Marvel Television drama. Despite this, Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. recently introduced the Framework, a Matrix-like digital world in which Hydra actually reigns supreme. Dalton, in fact, will be reprising his role as the late Grant Ward during the third part of the season. This led some to speculate that Paxton was set to return as well. However, sources close to the show claim that this was simply not the case and that there were no plans in place to bring Paxton back to the show.
Marvel issued a statement regarding Paxton's passing late Sunday: “Marvel is deeply saddened by the loss of Bill Paxton; his contributions to the Marvel Universe will be remembered fondly.”
Several of the show's cast members, including Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Brett Dalton and executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen also paid tribute to the late actor.
Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns on April 4th at 10pm.
