Jimmy Vee has officially been announced as the man taking over the role of R2-D2 in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Vee had been rumoured to be involved with the Rian Johnson movie as far back as December 2015.
The Scottish actor replaces Kenny Baker, who passed away at the age of 81 last summer. Baker had portrayed the little Astromech Droid since 1977's A New Hope. He also served as a consultant on The Force Awakens back in 2015.
Oh So Small, Vee's talent agency, broke the news on Twitter earlier this afternoon. The actor also issued the following statement soon afterwards:
“It’s been an absolute pleasure to have worked alongside the legendary Kenny Baker. Kenny was a fantastic actor and taught me all the ‘tricks’ on how he brought R2-D2 to life which I will continue to portray in his honor. I’m so excited to be a part of the Star Wars universe and can’t wait for everyone to see what we’ve been working so hard on for the last year.”
Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens on December 15, 2017.
