Matt Reeves, the man behind the masterful Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and the upcoming War for the Planet of the Apes, is in early talks to replace Ben Affleck as director on The Batman.
Affleck, who is starring in and producing the film, co-wrote the script with Geoff Johns. He was originally slated to direct the movie, but exited that role last week.
“Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give,” Affleck said in a statement. “It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio moved quickly to find a replacement, with Reeves shifting to the top of the list. The trade also reports that multiple conversations occurred with the director and the studio earlier today.
Reeves was a protégé of director J.J. Abrams.
He made his big screen directorial debut with the 2008 creature feature Cloverfield in 2008.
