Yesterday afternoon, word broke that Buffy The Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon was close to signing a deal with Warner Bros. to write, produce and direct a solo film based around the famed DC Comics heroine Batgirl. The movie will join the likes of Zack Snyder's Justice League and Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman as part of the ever expanding DCEU.
The big question is: Where will the movie draw inspiration from?
Well, according to Entertainment Weekly, sources have informed them that Whedon's Batgirl flick will center around Barbara Gordon, daughter of Commissioner Gordon, and will use the New 52 version of the character as a starting point.
In that timeline, launched back in September 2011, Barbara has recovered from the paralyzing injury inflicted upon her by The Joker after undergoing experimental surgery in South Africa. Penned by Red Sonja and Wonder Woman writer Gail Simone, these books follow a Batgirl who has regained full mobility once again, but is still haunted by her near-death experience.
While it is unclear how much of this series will be incorporated into Whedon's film, the trade has been informed that the movie will follow Simone's harder-edged storyline rather than the more light-hearted Batgirl of Burnside series from 2014.
Toby Emmerich, president and chief content officer of Warner Bros. Pictures Group is overseeing Batgirl with Jon Berg and Geoff Johns.
