Disney Is Planning Tron Reboot With Jared Leto
Disney is looking to get back on the grid.
The studio has entered the very early stages of of development for a brand new Tron movie, with Suicide Squad and Blade Runner 2049 actor Jared Leto circling the lead role.
While no writers or filmmakers are currently attached to the project, Justin Springer, who co-produced Tron: Legacy, will produce the new film. Leto and his producing partner Emma Ludbrook would also be involved in some producing capacity if the project moves forward.
The original Tron was released back in 1982. Starring Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner, the movie was set within the fantastic world inside a computer program. While it was far from a box office success, the movie would go on to amass a cult following in the years after due to its imaginative story and cutting edge special effects.
Disney revisited the world with Tron: Legacy in 2010. Starring Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde and a returning Jeff Bridges, the movie would bring in $400-Million at the worldwide box office and talk of a sequel would soon follow.
However, following a series of shutdowns and restarts, Disney finally pulled the plug on that idea once and for all in the spring of 2015.
Sources say this new project is not a direct sequel and is being built out of the source code of the deleted Tron 3 script. Leto would play a character named Ares, who has not appeared on screen before but was a key player in that script.
It is currently unknown if Kosinski or actors from Tron: Legacy will return.
