Big news today for all you DC Comics fans out there! Warner Bros. is putting a Batgirl solo movie into development as part of the DC Extended Universe. Filmmaker Joss Whedon, known for his amazing work on The Avengers, is nearing a deal to write, direct, and produce the film.
Whedon also directed Avengers: Age Of Ultron and is the man responsible for creating the much-loved, but short-lived sci-fi series Firefly starring Nathan Fillion.
No other producers are currently attached. Toby Emmerich, president and chief content officer of Warner Bros. Pictures Group is overseeing with Jon Berg and Geoff Johns.
One of the most popular female heroes in the world, Batgirl was last seen on the big screen in the 1997 flick Batman And Robin. She has also made numerous animated appearances outside of the comics on such shows as Batman: The Animated Series, Young Justice and Batman: The Brave And The Bold respectively.
Batgirl first appeared in DC Comics in 1967 as Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham City police commissioner James Gordon in “The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl!” by writer Gardner Fox and artist Carmine Infantino.
The character has never gotten her own solo movie.
