Fans are eagerly awaiting the release of Matt Reeves' The Batman, the first standalone film centered around The Dark Knight in the ever expanding DC Film Universe. While it was originally to begin production this Spring, Reeves coming on to take over as director from leading man Ben Affleck has pushed production on the highly anticipated solo film.
Now, Variety reporter Justin Kroll has taken to Twitter to add that the movie will most likely not see release in 2018 as the studio had originally hoped. Reeves is committed to the upcoming War of the Planet of the Apes through June so any work on The Batman, including casting meetings, won't begin until later this summer at the earliest.
Hearing Matt Reeves contracted to work on APES till at least end of June, so production on BATMAN likely not starting till 2018— Justin Kroll (@krolljvar) March 14, 2017
This gives those involved the time to really flush this one out and to make the Batman film everyone is hoping for. Additionally, things like this happen in the industry often, so it should be no cause for alarm that production on The Batman will be starting later than expected.
In more Batman news, it is rumored that the script for The Batman is about to undergo another rewrite. Our friends over at /Film have been informed by sources close to production that the story will be reworked from the ground up. This seems possible, especially with a new director calling the shots, but until something more concrete is announced, we'd advice our readers to take this as nothing more than a rumor at this time.
Still, should the script be reworked once again, this should be looked at as something positive. Reeves is a fine director who will no doubt do The Dark Knight justice. There is no doubt he'll want to put his own spin on the story instead of just taking over the leftovers as it were. Starting from the beginning may change a few things here and there, but it will also allow Reeves to tailor the project as he sees fit - something every director wants to do.
The most important thing here is making a good movie and not just rushing to meet a release date.
And that is exactly what appears to be going on with The Batman.
Expect more news soon!
