Patty Jenkins Expresses Excitement Over Batgirl Movie

Last week, word broke that Firefly creator Joss Whedon had entered talks to write, produce and direct a Batgirl solo movie for Warner Bros. as part of the DC Extended Universe.

Response to the news has been overly positive, and even Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins is excited to see what Whedon will do with the iconic DC superheroine. Jenkins expressed her excitement over the Batgirl movie while being interviewed recently by The Toronto Sun.

"I don’t even know if that deal is done or not – I don’t have the inside scoop on that. But if it is done, then I’m excited about it. I think it’s super exciting. The tone of Joss’ work is great for female superheroes. He takes such a fun approach and I think he’ll have fun in the DC universe, which will be excited to have him.”

Not much is really known about the project at this time. No other producers are currently attached, but we do know that Toby Emmerich, president and chief content officer of Warner Bros. Pictures Group is overseeing with Jon Berg and Geoff Johns.

Additionally, it sounds as though the movie will center around Barbara Gordon, daughter of Commissioner Gordon, and will use the New 52 version of the character as a starting point.

For those who don't know, in that timeline, launched back in September 2011, Barbara has recovered from the paralyzing injury inflicted upon her by The Joker after undergoing experimental surgery in South Africa. Penned by Red Sonja and Wonder Woman writer Gail Simone, these books follow a Batgirl who has regained full mobility once again, but is still haunted by her near-death experience.

It is also believed the new movie will follow Gail Simone's harder-edged Batgirl storyline rather than the more light-hearted Batgirl of Burnside series from 2014.

Look for more news soon!

And be sure to catch Wonder Woman from director Patty Jenkins in theaters June 2nd!
