Star Trek Discovery Welcomes Sonequa Martin-Green

We've known since December that Sonequa Martin-Green would be playing the lead role in the upcoming CBS All Access series Star Trek Discovery. And now we know exactly whom she'll be portraying on the new show.

The official Star Trek Twitter account has revealed that the actress has been cast in the role of First Officer Michael Burnham. For those who don't know, a First Officer is the second in command on a starship, just below the captain.

Sonequa Martin-Green represents the first African-American woman to lead the cast of a Trek ensemble. Additionally, this marks the first time the lead character in a Trek series hasn’t been a ship’s captain. This will allow the show to tell a different kind of story.

Originally slated to debut on CBS All Access beginning in January 2017, Star Trek Discovery has been pushed back numerous times, and is now scheduled to launch at some point between late this summer or early this fall.

Once it eventually does premiere, fans outside if the United States will be able to enjoy Star Trek Discovery through additional streaming platforms such as Netflix.

Sonequa Martin-Green joins a cast that also includes Rainn Wilson, James Frain, Anthony Rapp, Michelle Yeoh, Jason Isaacs, Terry Serpico, and Maulik Pancholy.
