Cannonball Run Is Getting A Remake
The 1980's high speed comedy Cannonball Run is getting a remake.
Warner Bros. has already tapped Central Intelligence helmer Rawson Thurber to direct.
Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant are in talks to write the script for the remake while Andre Morgan and Alan Gasmer are producing.
The original Cannonball Run was directed by Hal Needham and centered on an illegal cross-country race where the participants played dirty tricks on one another. Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise, Farrah Fawcett, Roger Moore, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Jackie Chan all appeared. The franchise spawned a total of three movies ending with Speed Zone in 1989.
Warner Bros. recently acquired all sequel and remake rights to the franchise from original copyright owners Brock Yates, the Hal Needham Estate, and Fortune Star LTD.
Cannonball Run is still one of our most favorite car-based films of all time! It was full of wacky fun and some pretty slick rides. While the sequels really didn't hold up to the original, we're more than willing to give a remake a chance, so here's hoping it'll be as fun as the 1981 original.
