Paramount Pictures has tapped John Cena for a lead role in the upcoming Bumblebee spinoff.
Cena joins a cast that includes the likes of Hailee Steinfeld, Jorge Lendeborg, Jason Drucker, Abby Quinn, Rachel Crow, Ricardo Hoyos and Gracie Dzienny.
The film takes audiences back to the 1980's and focuses on the fan-favorite yellow and black Autobot seen in the last five Transformers movies from director Michael Bay. Set in 1987, the film sees Bumblebee seeking refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.
Travis Knight will direct from a script penned by Christina Hodson.Bumblebee is the first spinoff in what the studio hopes will be a Transformers Cinematic Universe that will include prequels and offshoots from a line of movies that have generated over 3.7-Billion across the globe.
Franchise veterans Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Michael Bay will produce, alongside executive producers Steven Spielberg, Brian Goldner, Chris Brigham and Mark Vahradian.
Production on the project kicks off today in California.
Paramount Pictures has slated the film for a new release date of December 21st, 2018. This will see the spinoff going head-to-head with James Wan's Aquaman.
Aside from his work as a star WWE wrestler, Cena has also been building up an acting career recently with roles in The Wall, Daddy's Home and Trainwreck among others.
