Paramount Pictures has tapped John Cena for a lead role in the upcoming Bumblebee spinoff.

Charlie (Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.

Franchise veterans Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Michael Bay will produce, alongside executive producers Steven Spielberg, Brian Goldner, Chris Brigham and Mark Vahradian.

Production on the project kicks off today in California.

Paramount Pictures has slated the film for a new release date of December 21st, 2018. This will see the spinoff going head-to-head with James Wan's Aquaman.
