The next Pokémon movie, entitled Pokémon The Movie: I Choose You, is set to retell Ash's very first adventure as a Pokémon trainer - without the inclusion of usual companions Brock and Misty.
Ash will not be accompanied by his long-time friends in the 20th Pokémon film, which recounts Ash's earliest adventures in the original anime that first debuted back in the late-90's. Instead, he will be joined by newcomers Souji and Makoto.
Yeah, yeah, we know what you're all thinking (ourselves included)...
Anyways, the new film will even include a retelling of Ash's heartbreaking goodbye with Butterfree, but with Brock and Misty both written out. While these two glaring omissions may not sit well with fans of the original anime, the movie does apparently give the character's a small cameo appearance at the end of the film alongside Tracey, May, Max, Dawn, Iris, Cilan, Serena, Bonnie, and Clemont.
So at least there's that, right? *Sigh*
Souji and Makoto are even showing up in 20th anniversary images instead of Brock and Misty.
We'll be completely honest here. Since we grew up with the original anime right from the start, the absence of Brock and Misty really doesn't sit all that well with us. But, what are you going to do? The new movie is a retelling of Ash's first adventure after all, and you have to know that, after 20 years, some things were going to change whether we wanted them to or not.
What do you think, Pokémon fans?
Pokémon The Movie: I Choose You arrives in Japan on July 15th.
Here's hoping that an English sub won't be too far behind. Granted, we may not be all that crazy about some of the changes here, but that doesn't mean we don't want to check it out!
