When Arrow returns for its sixth season this fall, it will see Oliver and the surviving members of his team squaring off against a gritty and grounded crime lord in the form of Richard Dragon.
The villain was announced during San Diego Comic Con last weekend, with executive producer Marc Guggenheim taking a few moments to discuss the show's take on the classic character.
"You know, what I really like about our interpretation of Richard is, he’s very grounded. He’s not a flamboyant big bad, he doesn’t wear a costume, he really is a crimelord sort of in the Tobias Church model. For Tobias we only really saw him for about five episodes, so we were excited about the prospect of doing a cool, gritty crime lord, but for a longer period of time. We’ve never really done that on the show before, so it’s different."
Originally, Richard Dragon was a firmer thief turned hero with an impressive mastery of various forms of martial arts. Following the New 52 reboot of 2011, DC Comics introduced the character of Ricardo Diaz Jr., the son of a powerful drug kingpin who trained alongside the League Of Assassins. Ricardo would eventually end up killing his sensei before taking up the name of Richard Dragon and becoming s deadly crime lord in his own right. He would also end up leading a deadly team known as the Longbow Hunters. Clearly, the version we'll be seeing on Arrow this season will be inspired by his New 52 counterpart.
Interestingly, in the pages of DC Comics, it was John Diggle who was responsible for killing Dragon's father, so we're rather curious to see whether the show will follow this plotline.
Starring Stephen Amell, Willa Holland, David Ramsey, Echo Kellum, Emily Bett Rickards, Rick Gonzalez, Juliana Harkavy, Manu Bennett, Katie Cassidy and Paul Blackthorne, Arrow returns for its sixth season on Thursday, October 12th at 9pm.
