The Chapterverse expands this week with the release of Agents Of P.A.C.T. #2.
Captain Canuck has gone AWOL, forcing director Manon DesChamps to forge a new team of super agents pulled from the ranks of Equilibrium. On the hunt for a mysterious alien threat, the issue sees the team heading over to the United States to deal with the fallout from the creature. Along for the ride are Redcoat and Agent Marla Ritchie, who lands within the confines of Ground Zero with the intention of helping rescue as many civilians as possible.
However, the situation soon gets intense when a detachment of souped-up Equilibrium agents arrives on scene led by the Steeltown Hammer. As the tensions mount, Marla disobeys direct orders and sets her sights on aiding injured civilians. Despite her best efforts, however, she soon learns a harsh lesson - even heroes fail every so often.
Realizing they're short on much-needed firepower to handle what's coming next, director Manon DesChamps sends Redcoat out to retrieve the sharpshooter known as Kebec, a second AWOL agent who left the agency and took refuge over in Saskatchewan. With some convincing from her idol, who happens to be the former hero known as Fleur De Lys, Kebec return to active duty.
Back at P.A.C.T. headquarters, Redcoat confronts Agent Ritchie about her actions in the field and demands that she learn how to carry out missions without question. Meanwhile, a clue is uncovered that could help the organization hunt down the mysterious alien threat once and for all!
Once again, Kalman Andrasofszky has crafted an engaging and action-packed tale that is a welcome addition to the ever-expanding Chapterverse. One part X-Files, one part Birds Of Prey, Agents Of P.A.C.T. is an exciting and refreshing addition to any comic book library! The high point of this issue is not so much the action within Ground Zero, but rather the harsh lesson Agent Ritchie is forced to learn while out in the field. Sure, they may be superheroes, but they're also humans. And humans fail and make mistakes. However, the important thing is to learn from these experiences and move forward as a better person ready to face new challenges head-on.
This issue is used to humanize the superheroes of P.A.C.T. as they must deal with the grim reality that is failure, and we still can't help but feel for them in the process. Agents Of P.A.C.T. #2 puts one hero through the ringer as she learns that great responsibility is now put upon her - and that doing what's right isn't always the easiest thing to do.
Rating: 4/5 - "Heroes are humanized as the hunt for the alien menace continues."
