Maverick will return to the Danger Zone in July 2019.
Paramount has announced that the upcoming sequel will fly into theatres on July 12th, 2019, with Tom Cruise back in the role of Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. Cruise revealed back in May that plans for a sequel were finally moving forward during an interview on the popular Australian talk show Sunrise. Days later, co-star Val Kilmer expressed his excitement for the sequel.
Joseph Kosinski is expected to direct, while Jerry Bruckheimer is returning to produce the sequel, along with Skydance's David Ellison and Cruise.
The sequel, officially entitled Top Gun: Maverick, will follow a group of fighter pilots as they grapple with new drone technology that is making their old style of flying obsolete.
The late Tony Scott directed the original Top Gun back in 1986. It starred Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, Michael Ironside, Kelly McGillis, Meg Ryan and Tim Robbins.
