The man behind the monster is no more.
Haruo Nakajima, the original Godzilla suit actor, has passed away at 88 years old.
Nakajima, who portrayed the King of the Monsters from 1954 to 1972, began his career in in samurai and war films, notably Seven Samurai by Akira Kurosawa. In 1954, he landed the role of the fire breathing kaiju for Godzilla, King of the Monsters, which was directed by Ishiro Honda.
It was during an interview back in April that Nakajima revealed the first Godzilla suit was created from ready-mix concrete, which forced him to perform in a suit that weighed 100 kilos. This was due to the fact that such commodities as rubber were in short supply following World War II.
He soon became the principal suit actor for Toho and would also lend his talents to playing such other iconic monsters as Mothra in 1961 and King Kong in 1967’s King Kong Escapes.
In 2010, Nakajima would see his Japanese language autobiography, Monster Life: Haruo Nakajima, the Original Godzilla Actor, published.
Rest in peace, Mr. Nakajima! Thanks for helping bring the world's most iconic monster to life.
