DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. are in the early stages of developing an origin movie centred around The Joker. The studio has snagged Todd Phillips to co-write a script with Scott Silver. Phillips will direct the movie, while Martin Scorsese will produce.
This will be the first film under a new banner that has yet to be named in which WB can expand the canon of DC properties and create unique storylines with different actors playing the iconic characters. The intention with the project is to create an origin story that isn’t part of any other iteration. Interestingly, the studio is also looking to cast a new actor in the role of the Clown Prince Of Crime, possibly younger.
In regards to the setting, the studio is looking to create a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-’80s Gotham City that isn’t meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorsese’s films from that era, such as Raging Bull or Taxi Driver.
Jared Leto most recently portrayed The Joker in David Ayer's Suicide Squad, and he will be back in both the Suicide Squad sequel and the Harley Quinn spinoff - both of which will expand on the DC Expanded Universe begun with Man Of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice.
This new Joker origin film will not be part of the DC Expanded Universe.
Phillips and Silver are already said to be working on the script.
