Review: Dynamite - Green Hornet '66 Meets The Spirit #3

The third issue of Dynamite Comics' Green Hornet '66 Meets The Spirit arrives on newsstands next month, continuing the adventures of three of pop culture's most iconic heroes.

The issue opens with Spirit arriving in Chicago on the eve of the Ranger 4 rocket launch. On board this same train is Central City's own Professor Hartley Skol - and he's brought some  friends along for the ride. Shortly after arriving in the city, word breaks that something has gone horribly wrong and that the Ranger 4 rocket is set to crash in downtown Chicago.

The report sends the city into a blind panic as its populace desperately attempt to get out of Chicago before the disaster strikes. Amidst the chaos, Spirit reaches out to Britt and Kato, both of whom are more than a little shocked that this mysterious masked man somehow accessed the private radio link via the Black Beauty. After revealing just how he was able to locate Green Hornet's safehouse, the trio suit up and head to the hideout of the notorious Butcher Boyd - who's in the middle of doing what he does best.

Hornet, Kato and Spirit arrive to discover that Professor Skol is in cahoots with Boyd, preparing to kill four mysterious individuals packed inside a crate. Boyd disables Hornet's gas gun, forcing the heroic trio to engage in some god, old-fashioned fisticuffs with Boyd and his henchmen. In the end, the villains are defeated and Skol admits he was in the process of carrying out a plot intended to save his fledgling career after the Ranger 4 is stolen.

With the villains apprehended, the heroes go about rescuing the people trapped in the crate - and are shocked to discover just who they are moments before the Ranger 4 crashes into the bay.

And just wait until you witness the twist for yourself!

Green Hornet '66 Meets The Spirit #3 is easily the best issue of the miniseries to date! Fred Van Lente's mystery takes a giant leap forward, while Bob Q's fantastic art transports readers back to the 1960's with an explosive pallet of color that literally makes you feel as though you're smack in the middle of the Chicago chaos during an era that gave the world everything from Get Smart to Gladys Knight And The Pipps. When combined, these make for the best issue in the series to date.

You aren't going to want to miss this one! Things are about to get really good!

Rating: 5/5 - "Combining engaging art with a real page-turner of a tale, this is easily the nest issue of the miniseries to date!"

Green Hornet '66 Meets The Spirit #3 arrives on newsstands Wednesday, September 7th.
