Director Guillermo del Toro has once again opened up about the sequel to his kaiju-kicking epic Pacific Rim, and it sounds as though the world may be a slightly different place since the credits rolled.
Revealing it will not be an immediate sequel, the director revealed: “It is the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after — what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are not a threat. It’s quite a jump.”
Okay, so the world is free of Kaiju? Does that mean no more monster attacks, or showdowns with those hulking Jaeger mechs? Nope.
"The Kaijus are very different," del Toro reveals. So, sounds like they're going to show up in the sequel eventually.
In addition, it sounds as though some human characters from the first film will be showing up in the sequel as well. “I think that two of our main characters like in the first one are Burn [Gorman] and Charlie [Day],” he said, referring to the actors who played Dr. Hermann Gottlieb and Dr. Newton Geiszler, respectively. “They are really, really — I mean, honestly, they are probably the guys I have the most fun writing along with Hannibal Chau [Ron Perlman’s black market dealer] so just from a purely selfish drive, I like writing them.”
Sounds good to us!
Pacific Rim 2 will hit theaters April 7, 2017.
