Jurassic World vs. The Force Awakens

This has been a pretty epic week when it comes to movie trailers. On Tuesday, Universal Pictures surprised fans with a visit to Jurassic World. This will be the fourth installment in the iconic film franchise, one fans have been waiting over a decade for. Directed by Colin Trevorrow, with Steven Spielberg serving as executive producer, Jurassic World will be the first new entry in the series since 2001. And by the time it stomps into theaters on June 12th, 2015, it will have been 14 years since fans encountered InGen's dinosaurs.

Then, today, J.J. Abrams and the powers that be at Disney and Lucasfilm beckoned fans back to a galaxy far, far away with a first look at Star Was: The Force Awakens. When it was announced Disney had purchased Lucasfilm in October 2012, fans were not too thrilled - until it was revealed that a slew of new Star Wars films were in development. The Force Awakens will be the firs such film. The seventh chapter in the saga, it will arrive in theaters next December with J.J. Abrams at the helm. It will be the first live-action Star Wars film in 10 years.

Both film belong to two of the most iconic franchises in Hollywood. Each transformed the face of filmmaking in a big way, proving that nothing is impossible. And each has had a significant absence at the cinema of late. Thus, the reaction of fans doesn't really come as that big a surprise.

Fans go crazy for a familiar franchise. End of story.

We've been bombarded with e-mails over the last twelve hours, asking our opinion on which trailer we felt was best.

Honestly, that is one of the hardest questions we've ever had to answer.

Comparing two franchises as iconic as Star Wars and Jurassic Park is a near impossible task. Both have pushed the boundaries of filmmaking time and again. Both are handled by the best and brightest in Hollywood. Both transport moviegoers to worlds of fantastic wonder and terrifying danger. And both have some of the most passionate fans across the globe.

Still, both trailers released this week redefined awesome and proved fans go crazy when it comes to, once again, revisiting a familiar movie universe

One thing both trailers did well was keep key plot points secret. For instance,  we know Jurassic World will feature a new hybrid dinosaur cooked up in a lab. Yet, we know nothing of its appearance or character. In addition, we know The Force Awakens will take place years after the events portrayed in Return of the Jedi. Yet, we have no idea how the galaxy has changed over the last 30 years. We know Jurassic World will take us back to Isla Nublar and that the Millennium Falcon will return in The Force Awakens.  Each film will also feature returning characters and plenty of action, two things fans know each respective franchise is famous for.

We know there will be droids and dinosaurs, scientists and Seth, yet, as far as major plot points and pivotal scenes, it looks like, at least for the time being, these are being played pretty close to the chest. It may annoy some, particularly Star Wars fans, since Jurassic Park fans did get a slightly longer teaser this week, but isn't that really how a trailer should be done? Plenty of great imagery that whets the apatite without giving too much away. All too often, it seems as though trailers for upcoming films nowadays give away much too much

Not so with these two epics. You want to know what they're all about? Better get your butt to a theater!

Both these films will also be bound by classic film scores. Re-watch these two trailers again and try not to get chills listening to the slightly reworked musical scores of the great John Williams.

The point we're trying to make here guys is, while we feel it is impossible to compare the trailers for these two films, we are sure of one thing just by watching them - they're both going to be awesome!

Sure, not every addition to a franchise is a good thing - just look at the likes of Batman and Robin, Alien vs. Predator: Requiem, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Spider-Man 3 - yet, we're pretty certain both Jurassic World and Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be two of the biggest films of the2015 movie season.

How can we be so sure? These are both classic, nostalgic film franchises that have proven themselves at the box office time and time again. Whether it's the lush jungles of Isla Nublar, or the barren deserts of Tatooine, fans are willing to return to these iconic locations at a moments notice. From Raptors to Robots, these are the films that belong on the big screen.

And if that is not enough to convince you, one has Chris Pratt working with Velociraptors and the other has a three-bladed lightsaber. If those aren't billion doll ideas, we don't know what is!
