Independence Day 2 Gets A Title

The highly anticipated sequel to Roland Emmerich's 1996 sci-fi action film Independence Day finally has a title - Independence Day: Resurgence.

The title was revealed during a Q&A about the film on Monday, where cast members revealed some key aspects about the 2016 film, which will examine how the world has come together and prepared for an "inevitable" second invasion.

Said returning star Jeff Goldblum: "The world is different," he explained. "I, for now, as you say, it's my job to lead the way in making sure everyone's safe on this precious and beautiful planet."

He added, "We're all working in a beautiful way under not the best circumstances across borders. Borders are no longer relevant in the same way and that's a very beautiful idea in the brotherhood and sisterhood of mankind."

As the movie takes place 20 years after the first, a new president is running the United States in the form of actress Sela Ward. Her character will take a tougher stand than Bill Pullman's character did in the original Independence Day.

"It's a totally different political landscape," Ward said. "She's tougher, more decisive. Not afraid to use force. Sorry, Bill. It's a very different time."

The film will also feature plenty of advanced technology, including something called a moon tug which, according to Jeff Golblum, equals "bigger punch and bigger shields."

During the Q&A, actor Liam Hemsworth also shared some backstory on his character Jake, who operates said moon tug: "It's kind of unlucky how he ends up in that ship," he said. "Jake lost his parents in the first attack, he grew up in an orphanage, and eventually joined the military and became a fighter pilot, and eventually became one of the best of the best fighter pilots. I think his ego kind of got in the way, he made a bad decision and put someone's life at risk, and he got the great job of driving this moon tug, which is basically a forklift on the moon."

Independence Day 2 invades theaters on June 24th, 2016.
