Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant burst to the top of the worldwide box office this weekend.
Here in North America, the Sci-Fi sequel came in behind expectations with $36-Million from 3,760 different theatrical locations. While not a massive opening, it was enough to unseat the current box office king, Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2, and drop it to second place. However, the movie is lagging behind its predecessor, 2012's Prometheus, which opened with $51-Million domestically five years earlier.
Overseas, Alien: Covenant topped the international box office with $30.3-Million from 76 separate markets. That, combined with last weekend's overseas opening, and its domestic earnings, brings the film's total up to $117.8-Million worldwide.
Despite the rather low numbers, the film has received praise from critics and fans alike.
Starring Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Danny McBride, Billy Crudup, and James Franco, Alien: Covenant is in theatres now.
