Twenty years later, Starship Troopers is getting a brand new animated sequel.
Featuring the voice talents of Casper Van Dien, Dina Meyer and comedian DeRay Davis, Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars continues the adventure first begun in Paul Verhoeven's cult classic Sci-Fi film and is set to screen for a single night thanks to a new partnership between Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions and Fathom Events.
Ed Neumeier, who worked on the original Starship Troopers, wrote the new CGI feature.
The movie sees Rico demoted and relocated to a satellite station on Mars, while the Federation moves to attack the home planet of the bugs — but Mars just so happens to be the target of a secret bug attack at the same time, and it falls to Rico and a group of new recruits to keep the planet safe while the Federation's fleet is far out of reach.
Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars will screen in 500 select theaters across the country on Monday, August 21, with two screenings at 7:30pm and 10pm local time in each location. Each screening will feature bonus material beyond the movie itself, with Neumeier and Van Dien introducing the movie, along with interviews with the filmmakers and behind-the-scenes footage.
Tickets for the event will go on sale beginning June 19th.
Despite being considered a commercial flop when released in November of 1997, Starship Troopers has since gone on to gain a fervent following in the two decades that followed. Last year, Columbia Pictures announced plans to reboot the franchise with writers Mark Swift and Damian Shannon.
