Disney and Pixar's Cars 3 sped to the top of the weekend box office.
Here in North America, the animated sequel brought in $53.5-Million from 4,256 theatrical locations. Interestingly, it's a smaller opening than both Cars and Cars 2, but it was enough to bump Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman to second place after reigning at the box office for two straight weeks.
Overseas, while it lost out to both The Mummy and Wonder Woman, the Disney sequel brought in an additional $21.3-Million thanks to openings in such select markets as Mexico and Russia.
This brings the worldwide total of Cars 3 to $74.8-Million.
Cars 3 begins when, blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez, with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage!
Featuring the voice talents of Owen Wilson, Larry The Cable Guy, Bonnie Hunt, Cheech Marin, Armie Hammer, Christela Alonzo and Richard Petty, Cars 3 is in theatres now.
