While it may not have been a hit with critics last year, Suicide Squad was a commercial success. Nit only did the DC Film finish its box office run with $745-Million without a release in China, but it would even go on to win an Oscar for best makeup and hairstyling.
Warner Bros. is currently working on a sequel to the David Ayer flick, which will reunite the members of Task Force X as they're forced to carry out the orders of Amanda Waller in exchange for time off their prison sentences.
The Hollywood Reporter recently caught up with actor Joel Kinnaman, who portrayed Rick Flag in the first Suicide Squad, and asked for a status update on the upcoming sequel.
"As far as I know they're writing the script and I think the plan is to shoot it sometime in 2018," Kinnaman informed the trade when asked for a status update on the sequel.
He was then asked if he'd be back for it.
"I think I'll definitely come back for it."
The Hollywood Reporter would wrap things up by asking Kinnaman who he'd like to see take the reigns on the Suicide Squad sequel.
"Ultimately, I'd love for David Ayer to direct it, but if he doesn't want to direct it then someone who is great with character and that's able to ground the story and maybe put these characters in a more normal situation. It would be really interesting to see these crazy characters interact with regular people as well."
There is no director attached to the project at this time, but Warner Bros. has been meeting with directors for the gig over the last few months - including Hacksaw Ridge helmer Mel Gibson.
With Ayer currently attached to direct Gotham City Sirens, it is currently unclear if he'll be the one behind the camera for the Suicide Squad sequel. However, stranger things have happened.
Would you like to see Ayer return to direct the Suicide Squad sequel?
