Canada celebrates its 150th birthday this month, so let's take a look at another defender of the Great White North in the form of the mysterious Northguard.
Created by Mark Shainblum and Gabriel Morrissette back in 1984, Northguard first appeared in the pages of New Triumph #1 as Montréal resident Philip Wise. A young man of European Jewish ancestry, Wise would end up finding himself caught up in the efforts of a private corporation who were looking to stop a conspiracy known as ManDes, or Manifest Destiny.
This was a plot that involved forcing both Canada and the United States into a new quasi-Christian theocratic dictatorship.
Wise was recruited as the corporation's field agent after his predecessor was murdered. As things turned out, Wise was the only one within the corporation neurologically equipped to use a unique energy weapon, called the UniBand, which was built as an offshoot of applied physics experimentation. Shortly after agreeing to work for the corporation, Wise would adopt the superhero persona of Northguard.
On his very first mission, Wise would successfully thwart an assassination attempt the premier of Québec. Several other misadventures would follow, with Wise inadvertently inspiring a martial arts instructor to take up the superhero alter ego of Fleur de Les in the process.
Eventually, all of Wise's efforts led to the defeat of the ManDes conspiracy and the destruction of the UniBand. This effectively left the hero without any technological advantages.
Both the Canadian and American governments would end up covering over the affair.
So, what does the future hold for the hero known as Northguard? Well, as with Captain Canuck, Canadian comic publisher Chapterhouse has pulled Philip Wise under the umbrella of their ever-expanding Chapterverse. This all-new initiative sees the publisher acquiring storied Canadian superheroes and talented comic creators in an effort to create an interconnected comic book universe akin to those seen in the pages of DC and Marvel Comics.
Northguard will soon be relaunched by Chapterhouse and see Philip Wise attempting to track down The Aurora Dawn, a mysterious cult hoping to bring about the end of the world!
