With Black Manta, King Nereus and Ocean Master set to make their big screen debuts next year in Aquaman, some fans have been concerned that James Wan is shoehorning one too many villains into Arthur Curry's origin movie.
However, while speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Wan took a moment to put said worries to rest by revealing that his film will not feature three bad guys. "This is what I’ll say: I don’t have three villains," director James Wayn says. "I think that’s ridiculous! I would never go into an origin movie with three villains. We don’t even know the main character let alone the world and its antagonist. I believe in taking baby steps."
He then goes on to discuss details on both Black Manta and Ocean Master, who'll be the primary antagonist in the film.
"I want to introduce Arthur Curry in a much more emotional and powerful way, and introduce Mera played by Amber Heard, and of course there’s Nicole Kidman and Temuera Morrison playing his parents. We know Black Manta is in there, but I will say this: Patrick Wilson is the main antagonist in this film. I wouldn’t necessarily say ‘villain,’ but he’s the antagonist."
Does this perhaps mean that Ocean Master could be working as some sort of puppet master from the shadows while Manta does all the dirty work out in the field? We'll have to wait and see.
Still, it's good to hear that the Aquaman movie will be focusing on a single antagonist instead of following in the footsteps of Spider-Man 3.
Starring Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Willem Dafoe, Yahya Abdul-Mateen, Temuera Morrison and Nicole Kidman, Aquaman swims into theatres December 21st, 2018.
