Black Panther is no longer king at the box office.
This weekend saw the five week reign of Ryan Coogler's Marvel movie brought to an end by Pacific Rim Uprising. The Sci-Fi sequel took the top spot with $28-Million domestically.
Though this was a softer start than the $37-Million brought in by the original Pacific Rim back in July 2013, the film enjoyed a very solid start in the international market with $122.5-Million from 61 separate overseas markets. This brings the film's worldwide total up to $150-Million.
Steven S. DeKnight co-wrote and directed the newest installment, which stars John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Jing Tian, Cailee Spaeny, Rinko Kikuchi, Burn Gorman, Adria Arjona and Charlie Day. The sequel features a new generation of Jaeger pilots taking on a more fearsome class of kaiju - and in some cases, one another.
Rounding out the top five at the North American box office this weekend were Marvel's Black Panther, Lionsgate's I Can Only Imagine, the animated sequel Sherlock Gnomes and the Alicia Vikander adventure flick Tomb Raider.
