Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One has begun its theatrical run, bringing in $3.8-Million at 3,500 North American locations in Wednesday night previews.
Based off of the bestselling novel from Ernest Cline, the film is projected to open with $38-$42-Million over the four day Holiday weekend. This should allow it to dominate the North American box office over the Easter weekend. Ready Player One will expand into 4,200 additional theatrical locations today, and in 62 separate international markets.
The film is set in 2045, where mankind frequents an elaborate virtual reality world called Oasis in an effort to escape the grim reality of the physical world around them. It is against this backdrop that a young man by the name of Wade Watts discovers clues to a game within the program that promises the winner full ownership of the Oasis.
Starring Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, T.J. Miller, Simon Pegg, and Mark Rylance, the film was penned by Ernest Cline and Zak Penn and is directed by Steven Spielberg.
