Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One is on track to dominate the worldwide box office.
The virtual reality adventure, an adaption of Ernest Cline's bestselling novel, brought in a solid $17-Million during its first Friday in North American theatres. This puts the film on track for a domestic debut of $53-Million, earning it the top spot at the box office and exceeding initial expectations that put the film somewhere between $38-$42-Million.
Overseas, the film opened day and date in 62 international markets, and earned roughly $28-Million on Friday, pushing its international bank up to $42-Million. If that's not impressive enough, Ready Player One also enjoyed a solid opening in China with $14-Million. This earned it the #1 spot in that country and marked the third-highest Chinese debut for a Warner Bros. film.
This puts the worldwide total of Ready Player One at over $95-Million.
The film is set in 2045, where mankind frequents an elaborate virtual reality world called Oasis in an effort to escape the grim reality of the physical world around them. It is against this backdrop that a young man by the name of Wade Watts discovers clues to a game within the program that promises the winner full ownership of the Oasis.
Starring Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, T.J. Miller, Simon Pegg, and Mark Rylance, the film was penned by Ernest Cline and Zak Penn and is directed by Steven Spielberg.
