Tomb Raider has dug up a pretty impressive opening weekend.
The Alicia Vikander adventure flick, based off the recently rebooted video game franchise of the same name, debuted to $23.5-Million here in North America. However, the real story comes from overseas. While Black Panther kept the newcomer to second place here at home, Tomb Raider topped the international box office with a massive $84.5-Million from 65 markets.
According to Warner Bros., Tomb Raider took in nearly 50% of the box office among the top five films in China, where the action-adventure played on 15,500 screens, and notched the studio’s seventh-highest opening weekend in that market with a solid $41.1-Million.
Tomb Raider also took the top spot in Europe, winning the box office in several markets including Russia, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Mexico respectively.
Totalling everything up, Tomb Raider finishes off its first weekend at the box office with a not too shabby $126-Million. No doubt, Warner Bros. will be pleased with that number.
The film follows a younger, less experienced version of everyone's favorite globetrotting archaeologists as she attempts to unravel the mystery behind her father’s disappearance.
Starring Alicia Vikander, Dominic West, Daniel Wu, Walton Goggins, Kristin Scott and Thomas Derek Jacobi, Tomb Raider is in theatres now. Have you seen it yet?
