David Leitch's Deadpool 2 has kicked off its theatrical run with $18.6-Million.
The highly anticipated sequel smashed the record for top preview for an R-rated film, topping the $13.5-Million brought in by the Warner Bros. remake of It back in September.
The sequel is on track to dominate the long weekend, currently on track to open somewhere in the ballpark of $130-$150-Million from on 4,349 screens - the widest release for a Fox film.
When the first Deadpool opened in February 2016, it stunned with a massive $132-Million opening, which remains the record for an R-rated title. It would go on to gross $783-Million globally, making it the highest-grossing R-rated movie in Hollywood history.
The sequel sees Ryan Reynolds back as the Merc With The Mouth, who assembles a group of mutants to battle the relentless Cable - a mutant on the hunt for a mysterious child.
After surviving a near fatal bovine attack, a disfigured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Mayberry’s hottest bartender while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste. Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Wade must battle ninjas, the yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines, as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and flavor – finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World’s Best Lover.
The upcoming sequel reunites Ryan Reynolds, as the titular Merc With A Mouth, with Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, T.J. Miller as Weasel, Stefan Kapicic as Colossus, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, and Karan Soni as Dopinder. Joining the regulars are newcomers Josh Brolin as Cable, and Zazie Beetz as Domino.
