Warner Bros. wants to expand on Jared Leto's Crown Prince Of Crime by giving his version of The Joker his very own standalone film set within the DC Films Universe.
Leto is set to star and executive produce the project.
Plot details are unknown at this time, but the studio’s idea is to expand on the world created by David Ayer's Suicide Squad and to tie into future installments of that property. Back in April, the studio snagged Cathy Yan for a Birds Of Prey film set to star Margot Robbie back in her role as Harley Quinn, and the next goal was to set up a film for Leto's Joker.
Keep in mind that this new movie is not the Joker origin film announced by the studio last Fall. That project, directed by Todd Phillips, will fall under a new origins banner that would be separate from the current cinematic DC universe.
This new banner would allow multiple actors and versions based on the same character with no overlap. Joaquin Phoenix is expected to star in that film as the iconic villain.
It’s currently unknown when Leto's film will enter production, but the search for a writer is now underway. It is also unclear if the project will begin filming before or after the previously announced sequel to Suicide Squad, which Gavin O'Connor will direct.
Fans were disappointed with the amount of screen time given to the Joker in Suicide Squad, and Leto himself said that he hoped to expand on the character in future films in a more substantive, if not starring, role. So, it looks like Warner Bros. is now looking to correct this oversight.
