Iceman Will Fly Once More.
Val Kilmer has joined the cast of Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel to the 1986 action flick that launched leading man Tom Cruise into super stardom. Kilmer will reprise his role as Lt. Tom "Iceman" Kazansky in the new film.
In the original Top Gun, Kilmer's character was a rival to Tom Cruise's Maverick. The pair eventually became friends after earning each other's grudging respect.
Last Thursday, Cruise took to social media to announce the start of production on the sequel.
Set in modern times, Top Gun: Maverick follows fighter pilots as they grapple with drone tech that is making their old style of flying obsolete. Cruise returns to the role of Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in the film, which is being directed by Tron: Legacy helmer Joseph Kosinski.
Jerry Bruckheimer returns to produce the sequel alongside Cruise and David Ellison.
Legendary German composer Harold Faltermeyer, who created the memorable synth score of Top Gun, is also returning to the production.
Top Gun: Maverick takes flight on July 12th, 2019.
