Marvel's Black Widow spinoff has snagged a director.
Cate Shortland has signed on to helm the project, which will star Scarlet Johansson.
This ends a search that has lasted over half a year, as Marvel with between 70 to 75 potential candidates for the job. A female director was always a priority for the studio.
Shortland, who hails from Australia, had a fan in Johansson, who pushed for the helmer.
The actress admired Shortland’s handling of the female lead in Lore, a critically acclaimed 2012 drama that told of a young woman who leads her siblings through Germany as the Allied army rolls in. Her most recent film was Berlin Syndrome, a 2017 thriller that starred Teresa Palmer.
Jac Schaeffer wrote the most recent draft for Black Widow.
The film is said to be set before the events of The Avengers.
It will be the second female-centric Marvel flick after Captain Marvel.
