Jesse L. Martin Takes Medical Leave From The Flash

Detective Joe West is taking a break.

Actor Jesse L. Martin, who portrays Barry Allen's adoptive father on the hit CW series The Flash, is stepping away from the hit DC Entertainment drama for a bit.

Martin suffered a back injury during the recent summer hiatus, which is why he has been seated in almost all of his scenes he has been featured in this season.

"Jesse Martin is taking a medical leave of absence from The Flash. We wish him a full and speedy recovery and look forward to his return as Detective Joe West," the studio said in a statement on the situation earlier today.

As of right now, it’s unclear how long Martin will be off-screen.

So far this season, Joe has mostly been confined to the West home, where we usually find him seated on one of the numerous pieces of furniture. He's helped Cecile and Iris deal with the struggles of motherhood, and even had a confrontation with Cicada last week.

Sources say Joe's absence will be addressed on the show.

The team here at Infinite Earths wants to wish Mr. Martin a speedy recovery!

We look forward to your return to Central City.

Cathy Yan Confirms R Rating For Birds Of Prey

Speaking at the US-China Entertainment Summit at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles last night, Birds of Prey director Cathy Yan discussed plans for her upcoming DC Film.

Including confirmation that this one is aiming for an R rating.

Upon landing the gig, Yan became the first female Asian director to ever direct a superhero film, and the third female filmmaker to join the DC club after Patty Jenkins and Ava DuVernay.

Asked by moderator Janet Yang how she scored the job, Yan said, "I did my homework."

She continued, "I could not put the script down, it had so much dark humor to it which a lot of my work does, and there are themes of female empowerment which are so strong  and relateable. So I went in with, not with confidence, but at least a sense that I belonged in the room, that somehow magically in terms of timing and luck that this opportunity was open to me and I was definitely going to make the best of it."

She also confirmed that Cassandra Cain, a mute martial artist who inherits the mantle of Batgirl in DC Comics lore, will be appearing in the film. No actress was revealed to have the part yet.

Birds Of Prey stars Margot Robbie back as Harley Quinn, alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress and Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary.

Infinite Earths Reviews The McFarlane Toys Captain Kirk

Ever since its inception all the way back in September of 1966, there has been plenty of Star Trek merchandise released. Everyone from Mego to Playmates and even Diamond Select Toys have taken a crack at the classic license over the last five decades, offering fans everything from action figures to prop replicas and more.

However, when compared to other brands like Star Wars, Transformers and even G.I. Joe, Trekkers have always seemed to be at the short end of the stick when it came to what could be found at retail - and when. Well, the fine folks over at McFarlane Toys are hoping to change that with a brand new line of 7" action figures based on the long running science fiction series, and today we'll be taking a look at the first figure in the line...

...It's the man who defeated the Kobayashi Maru, Captain James T. Kirk.

Captain of the USS Enterprise, Captain James Tiberius Kirk is one of the most renowned leaders in Starfleet history. A courageous and intelligent commander, Kirk leads his fearless crew to the far reaches of space, Where No Man Has Gone Before. Regarded as a maverick by many, Captain Kirk strays from the path of Starfleet regulations, but only when the ends justify the means.

Based on his appearance in Star Trek: The Original Series, Captain Kirk is the first of two brand new action figures being offered as the starting point for McFarlane Toys' new wave of collectible Star Trek action figures. He stands 7" tall, features a striking likeness to a young William Shatner, and is pretty much one of the very best looking Star Trek action figures that we've ever laid our eyes on.

The figure comes packaged on a rather eye-catching card back - complete with yellow borders, the classic Star Trek logo, and a very nice image of Captain Kirk dominating the upper right corner. The plastic bubble clearly displays the figure and all his included accessories within, while the back of the packaging offers a look at both Captains Kirk and Picard - the first two figures being offered in this new, and very exciting line. Overall, the packaging is both simplistic and colorful, and we've no doubt there will be many a collector out there happy to keep these mint on card for the foreseeable future - especially as the line expands.

Jumping headlong into the new age of action figure production, McFarlane Toys has incorporate digital face printing within this line, thus allowing for one of the very best William Shatner likenesses that we've ever seen in plastic form! Even at a quick glance, there is no denying which character this is supposed to be as McFarlane's choice to go digital has resulted in a spot on facial sculpt that perfectly captures the iconic character as he appeared all those years ago.

As one would expect, McFarlane's Kirk figure comes dressed in his standard command gold uniform - complete with sculpted Starfleet insignia and gold ranking braids around the wrists of both arms. The detail work on the outfit is beyond impressive, with some very nice texturing spread throughout. The lines in the fabric look true to life, and even include some very nice sculpted hem lines that add an additional level of realism to the overall figure.

Black trousers and shiny black boots complete the overall look, which is unmistakably 60's era Star Trek, but the sculpt is just the first area where this figure truly shines.

Unlike past offerings from lines such as Spawn and Assassin's Creed, McFarlane Toys appears to finally be listening to collectors here by loading up these new Star Trek figures with a rather nice range of motion previously unseen on those which have come before. McFarlane Toys has incorporated articulation throughout the near entirety of Captain Kirk, with movement built into the head, shoulders, arms, wrists, thighs, legs, knees and feet.

Granted, this may not seem like much when compared to lines like Marvel Legends or even DC Essentials, but when you consider that most of the Star Trek figures we've gotten over the years have more closely resembled slightly articulated statues rather than actual plastic playthings, then the 12+ bendable bits featured here on this new version are not too shabby at all.

Even the complete absence of any waist or abdominal movement can be overlooked for the plain and simple reason that it avoids breaking up the lines of an already impressive looking piece, and gives it a very nice sense of fluidity. Nothing appears broken up, as if naturalness of sculpt was sacrificed in exchanged for a few more moveable parts - and we must admit that we really like that decision. It just makes for a much more pleasing sculpt and, given that the crew of the Enterprise wasn't known for being comprised of the most physically imposing people, it just works. Besides, who's going to pose this thing doing sit-ups anyway, right?

Each joint holds strong, moving with realative ease and showing no signs of deterioration despite repeated use. This looks to promote a nice strong shelf life out of the brand and, as we said above, even if it's not the most plentiful articulation model, it's certainly a step in the right direction for both McFarlane Toys and Star Trek action figures in general.

And that's a very good thing indeed!

Be warned however that these figures could be a little sticky in the joint department when initially opened. As such, we'd recommend that fans take care when moving the figure around the first few times to avoid breakage. Keep a hairdryer near by if you wish, but we found that after just a few minutes of gentle manipulation, everything softened up and could be posed with relative ease.

And then there's the paint! It is absolutely superb! From the top of his head to the bottom of his boots, Captain Kirk features one of the most strikingly perfect paint jobs to ever be featured on a Star Trek figure. Even coating, crisp lines, subtle wash work, it all comes together to form something that is truly pleasing to behold with the eyes. If you're looking for sloppiness, you won't find it here. The artisans of McFarlane Toys have clearly taken their time in assembling this new figure, and it shows! Everything is sharp, clean and really adds to the overall presentation that is this new plastic rendition of Captain James T. Kirk.

Seriously, we've come into contact with plenty of Star Trek figures during our time here at Infinite Earths, and we can honestly say that we can't recall even one example that holds so much as a Tribble to what McFarlane Toys has been able to pull off on this figure when it comes to overall paint applications. They really are spectacular, and McFarlane Toys has really raised the bar with this one!

To go along with that stunning likeness, strong sculpt and superb paint work, McFarlane Toys has also included a number of very cool accessories with their Captain Kirk figure.

Packaged alongside their Captain Kirk figure, you'll find a black display base, a single interchangeable hand, and three iconic Trek tools. These include the compact Phaser Pistol, a Communicator and the very cool Phaser Rifle. Each piece features a very nice level of sculpted details and strong paint applications. While the Phaser Pistol and Communicator are both very nice - and must-haves with any classic era Star Trek character, it is the Phaser Rifle that takes the top prize in the accessory department.

Based on the device seen in the classic Star Trek episode Where No Man Has Gone Before, this accessory features the same strong level of sculpting and paint as the other pieces included with the figure - and we love the addition of the spinning barrels and sculpted computer screen! The Phaser Rifle was a great choice to include along with Kirk and really embraces the art-deco science fiction feel of the original series and its adventurous spirit!

If you haven't guessed it yet, we love everything about McFarlane's Captain Kirk! From the moment that the initial prototypes were shown, we were hooked. Never had we seen Star Trek figures that so closely resembled their on-screen counterparts and we're pleased to say that not much has changed between prototype and production model.

McFarlane Toys has started their new Star Trek line off on the right foot thanks to Captain Kirk, and at a mere $18 a pop, they've raised the bar as to what a figure at that price point should be. And, with its superb sculpting, stellar paint, excellent accessories and decent level of articulation, this one is worth every penny!

Kudos on a strong start, McFarlane Toys! We're eager to see where you'll be taking this line in the future!

+ Solid Sculpting
+ Stunning Likeness
+ Superb Paint Applications
+ Decent Level Of Articulation
+ Plenty Of Appropriate Accessories
+ Easily Swappable Hands
+ Display Stand Included

- Hip Articulation Seems Somewhat Dated
- Window Box Packaging Would Be Nice

Overall: "McFarlane Toys has started this new line off on the right foot, raising the bar for Star Trek figures as never before!"
