Nick Nolte Joins The Mandalorian

Prolific actor Nick Nolte has joined the cast of The Mandalorian.

Pedro Pascal and Gina Carano also star.

Details surrounding Nolte's role are being kept under wraps for the time being.

Jon Favreau penned the series, which is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. It follows the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.

Known for roles in Graves and Gracepoint, this will be Nolte's first role within the Star Wars Universe. Interestingly enough, the actor had been on the short list of those being considered for the part of Han Solo in the original movie before the part went to Harrison Ford.

Dave Filoni will direct the first episode of the series. Taika Waititi, Bryce Dallas Howard, Rick Famuyiwa, and Deborah Chow will direct additional episodes.

Jon Favreau will also executive produce along with Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy, and Colin Wilson. Karen Gilchrist will serve as co-executive producer.

Disney is also planning a series centered around Cassian Andor starring Diego Luna back in the role of the Rebel spy he portrayed in Gareth Edwards' Rogue One.

Both shows will debut on the Disney Plus streaming service, which launches next year.

Marvel Comments On Daredevil Cancellation

Last night, Netflix made the shocking announcement that they had decided to cancel the hit Marvel Comics series Daredevil after three seasons. Fans, understandably, were not happy.

After all, with both Iron Fist and Luke Cage meeting the same fate back in October, the total roster of original Marvel series on the streaming service now stands at two - for now. Granted, with Disney planning to launch their own service next year in Disney Plus, it's entirely possible that all these shows will return when the Disney service kicks off next year. However, for many fans, this doesn't make the situation any easier.

Now, Marvel has issued a statement on the show's cancellation, confirming that they do indeed have plans to continue the adventures of Matt Murdock outside of Netflix.

Marvel is extremely grateful to the huge audience that loved Marvel’s Daredevil. From the moment of young Matt’s first act of heroism to the birth of Page, Murdock, & Nelson, it has been a unbelievable journey. We are incredibly proud of the amazing showrunners and writers starting with Drew Goddard and Steven DeKnight, Marco Ramirez and Doug Petrie and Erik Oleson, Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Vincent D’Onofrio and our casts who brought our characters to life with such excellence, and every one of the fantastic crews in NYC. We look forward to more adventures with the Man without Fear in the future."

Could we see Matt Murdock and Co. show up on future seasons of The Punisher or Jessica Jones? It's certainly possible. Or, perhaps Daredevil will eventually make his way to the big screen. Whatever the case may be, it sounds as though Marvel still has plans for the Man Without Fear. And, we're more than a little eager to discover what those plans are!

What do you think, Infinite Earths fans?

When and where do you feel we'll see Daredevil next?

Review: DC Comics - Injustice vs. Masters Of The Universe #5

An Uneasy Alliance Is Formed!

The strongest DC crossover in years continues this week in the penultimate issue of Tim Seeley's Injustice vs. Masters Of The Universe.

In its action-packed pages, an uneasy alliance is formed when the combined forces of Batman and Superman form an uneasy alliance to save Eternia and stop Darkseid from turning the planet into slag. However, after years of fighting, will the Man Of Steel and the Caped Crusader be able to push their differences to the side in order to accomplish their mission?

And then there's the issue of Skeletor running around with the power of Shazam flowing through his veins! Will Skeletor be able to claim Eternia as his own and kill off Darkseid before Prince Adam can return to restore peace to the planet once more? Well, we can't tell you that, but we will say that fans should buckle up for a pretty epic issue - and its equally epic showdown!

Like we said above, this is one of the strongest crossover titles that DC Comics has released in years! It's grand in scale and scope and, while it's not without it's flaws, Injustice vs. Masters Of The Universe remains a fun and fantastical read that brings together two of the biggest brands in pop culture history with near flawless abandon!

Tim Seeley and Freddie Williams II certainly know a thing or two about how to craft a compelling crossover, and we're quite eager to see how they'll wrap things up before the new year!

It's more than a little surprising that a comic crossover between an 80's era Filmation cartoon and a modern era fighting game works this well, but it does! It really, really does!

And we just can't get enough!

Rating: 4/5 - "One of the finest comic crossovers DC has done in years!"

Injustice vs. Masters Of The Universe #5 is available now.

Until next time, Infinite Earths fans!

We Chat With Brian Volk-Weiss About Discontinued

Late last year, we were privileged to speak with Brian Volk-Weiss about the hit Netflix series, The Toys That Made Us. That eight part documentary series about the toys that we all know quickly became a monster hit as fans flocked to the streaming service to learn about the secret histories surrounding some of the biggest brands in pop culture history - from G.I. Joe to Star Trek.

Now, to cap off 2018, the team behind the hit series is back with an all-new series entitled Discontinued. Expanding on the ideas explored in The Toys That Made Us, the new show looks to explore some of the biggest brands and trends of years past. Hosted by YouTube star Andrea Meadows, Discontinued looks to inject some nostalgic fun into your holiday season.

We recently caught up with Mr. Volk-Weiss to chat about the new show, which he says will make people happy by reminding them of a great period of their lives.

Check out the full interview posted below...

Infinite Earths: "Can you please give us a rundown as to what Discontinued is?"

Brian: "Discontinued is a show that’s a deep dive into our nostalgic past that reminds us (who are old enough to remember) how key products and places used to work and feel like.  But what our show also tries to do is answer the question of ‘what happened to it?"

Infinite Earths: "What sort of brands will you be exploring in the new show?"

Brian: "In the pilot we look into the Taco Bell Chihuahua, Speak and Spell, the original Hummer, Toys R Us and a few other surprises."

Infinite Earths: "How will Discontinued appeal to fans of The Toys That Made Us?"

Brian: "I think that similar to Toys That Made Us, Discontinued will bring back happy memories for most people and also give them the back story of why they were created and why, in this case, they went away."

Infinite Earths: "You've experienced great success with The Toys That Made Us on Netflix. What made you decide to take Discontinued to a television network?"

Brian: "When you create a show you always want it to end up at a home that’s the most passionate for it, and the CW was not only the most passionate about Discontinued, but they also have  a lot of huge shows that are a big part of present day pop culture, so it just really made a lot of sense."

Infinite Earths: "What do you hope to accomplish with this new series most of all?"

Brian: "I want the show to make people happy and remind themselves of a great period of their lives, because with the toys that made us, my favorite part of the show is all the fan feedback we get that shows us how fathers and sons and mothers and daughters are brought together by sharing a part of their pasts with their offspring."

Infinite Earths: "What new challenges did this series present for you and your crew?"

Brian: "It was very challenging to only be able to tell 5 stories in one episode, because there were so many cool things we wanted to dive into that we didn’t have the time for (i.e., Nintendo’s power glove!)"

Infinite Earths: "Andre Meadows is one of the most entertaining YouTubers today! What made you decide to bring him on the show?"

Brian: "His energy and delivery are A+, combined with the fact that his credentials in this space are unmatched."

Infinite Earths: "Who are some of the Insider specialists we'll be meeting on Discontinued?"

Brian: "Let’s just say that one of my favorites is we got the voice of one of the most iconic characters of the 90s commercial world…"

Infinite Earths: "Why do you feel viewers should check out Discontinued? What does it offer fans?

Brian: "For people 35 and up it will remind them of their past and things that they haven’t’ seen or thought about in a long time.  For people who are younger, it will show them a world that they missed but was the foundation of what we all live with today, for the most part. And also, no matter what age, it’s just a really fun and entertaining show that I think will end and people will feel good about themselves and the world they live in."

Infinite Earths: "What do you feel sets Discontinued apart from other nostalgia filled shows available today?"

Brian: "Two words; the comedy! We had some of the best writers and producers of the comedy community make the show very funny and a fast watch…people will enjoy what they’re seeing and be able to go to school or work the next day and tell people what they learned, but it won’t be a chore to have learned the new stuff."

Infinite Earths: "If you could highlight one thing about the show above all else, what would it be?"

"I’d really highlight Andre, because he was just the perfect host to bring us through the world we created and he knocked every line out of the park and added a ton of his personality and insight to his role.  He’s really one of the best hosts I’ve ever worked with, and he was game for anything!"

Infinite Earths: "What would you like to do with Discontinued in the future, if given the chance?"

Brian: "I’d like to make 99 more episodes and be able to cover every single thing that was cool/interesting about the 80s and 90s and hear all the feedback from the viewers about what these same products and places meant to them.  It’s really the feedback that’s the best part of my job."

Infinite Earths would like to personally thank Mr. Volk-Weiss for taking time out of his busy schedule to speak with us about his new show! Best of luck to all those involved, and please know the we can't wait to take this nostalgia filled trip with all of you next month!

Special thanks to Brian Adams and Rachael Ungashick for helping make this interview possible!

Discontinued premieres Sunday, December 16th on The CW.

Until next time, Infinite Earths fans!

Infinite Earths Reviews The DC Essentials Black Manta

This year marks the 20th anniversary of DC Collectibles. In celebration of this milestone, the company is releasing a new series of collectible action figures known as DC Essentials.

Based on the stellar DC Rebirth designs of Jason Fabok, and sculpted by the very talented Paul Harding, the brand new line strays away from the smaller size of the now defunct DC Icons assortment and returns to the larger 7" scale of such lines as the DC Designer Series.

With the first wave released in comic and specialty shops, as well as numerous online retailers, this past summer, DC is looking to really top things with their second assortment of DC Essentials action figures. And nowhere is this more apparent then with their striking Black Manta figure!

Rising from the deep in the pages of Aquaman #35 all the way back in September of 1967, Black Manta has served as the arch nemesis of Aquaman for the last four decades. Known as David Hyde, Black Manta would quickly become a formidable foe to the heroes of the DC Universe. Although he often works alone, the character would join up with several nefarious organizations over the years, ranging from the Legion Of Doom to The Society, and even the Suicide Squad.

This latest plastic rendition of Bob Haney and Nick Cardy's vile villain is based on the work of the very talented Jason Fabok, whose track record has gone on to include work on everything from Man Of Steel to the Swamp Thing Winter Special. And it is, without a doubt, the very best action figure to be released in this new line to date! Join us now for a look at this iconic DC Comics villain...

The DC Essentials Black Manta figure stands at 6.81" tall, and is depicted in a full-body skin tight black diving suit that leaves very little to the imagination. This costume is complemented by the addition of some very cool technological details that include a single gauntlet blaster, a metallic collar sporting mechanical gills, and a backpack featuring weapons storage, propulsion jets, and twin flexible cables that connect to his helmet.

And speaking of the helmet, is it ever impressive! Black Manta sports some pretty massive headgear here, featuring some outstanding silver paint, deeply cut etching and those signature red eyes that have become a staple of Aquaman's classic foe for a number of years now. This is easily the most prominent feature of the figure, and one that is sure to draw your eyes time and time again.

However, we will admit it does make the figure somewhat top heavy. It's not a major issue, and can easily be rectified with some slight repositioning, but just be warned that Manta's impressive headgear does cause him to swan dive every once in a while.

The body sculpt used here once again features an impressive musculature structure that works really well on all of these figures, giving them a slightly more appropriate level of physicality that appears somewhat leaner and more realistic than more bulkier versions depicted throughout the 80's and 90's. Add to this the almost slick looking body suit, a near monochromatic paint job and all those really cool techy bits and you've got a piece that really stands out, bringing something truly unique and striking to the ranks of your personal action figure collection.

Then there's the paint. As one would expect, it's seriously striking and certain to attract attention even when simply standing on your shelf. The colors present here, although few, are sharp and made up of even applications and crisp lines throughout. As with past offerings from this line, Black Manta shows absolutely no evidence of smears, splotches, runs or bleeds to speak of. In fact, we here at Infinite Earths feel that the DC Essentials line is quickly becoming one of the best DC Collectibles series to ever be released thanks in no small part to the strength of the sculpting and paint applications present on each subsequent figure.

And, what of the articulation making up this new figure? Well, it's as plentiful as you'd expect. Once again, DC Collectibles has loaded up this latest DC Essentials figure with multiple moveable parts. From his ball-jointed head down to his feet, Black Manta features a total of 23 separate points of articulation - including lots of ball joints, and double joints at the elbows and knees respectively.

This wide range of motion allows Black Manta to pull off a number of appropriate poses with relative ease, and we're happy to report that the joints all hold strong and show no signs of weakness even after repeated use. Straight out of the box, Manta's joints all move with an appropriate level of smoothness, with no issues regarding sticky or stuck parts. This is one high quality piece of plastic, as DC Collectibles had crafted something that has already raised the bar as to what the DC Essentials line should be - not bad, especially when you consider we're a little over two assortments into this new series!

By way of accessories, the DC Essentials Black Manta figure has been loaded up with a small arsenal of weapons that include a pair of swords and the terrifying tri-blade that he's been depicted wielding in the more recent Aquaman books. While all three pieces are crafted out of a simple grey plastic with very little sculpted details, the weapons are appropriate to the character, and all can be held within either of Black Manta's hands or stored within that very cool backpack.

Interestingly enough, this is only the second DC Essentials figure that we feel came with the perfect level and type of accessories - the other, of course, being Deathstroke. DC Collectibles seems to have done their homework here, outfitting Black Manta with weapons that longtime fans will recognize from throughout his most recent appearances. Even casual collectors should be impressed with the selection present here, as they do a really great job of selling the past savagery of the character, and up the figure's overall cool factor ten fold!

Yes, we walk away from our time with the DC Essentials Black Manta extremely satisfied with the final product! The sculpt is strong, the articulation plentiful, and the overall presentation and execution quite pleasing to behold.

Like past offerings in the line, Black Manta comes encased in collector friendly window-box packaging. Predominantly black and white in color, it features a Black Manta insignia on the top flap and a very cool 20th Anniversary DC Collectibles emblem sits in the upper left corner decked out in some rather snazzy golden foil. Flipping things over to the back, you get a stock image of the figure and a generic write-up about the DC Essentials line, which is accompanied by a look at the other three figures in the wave - Aquaman, Superman and Brainiac respectively. The overall presentation is very nice, and we must admit we love having the option of returning the DC Essentials figures back to their boxes for display if we so desire.

It's no secret that Aquaman and his rogues gallery haven't really commanded much respect over the years - something only recently changed thanks to Geoff Johns' New 52 relaunch of the characters back in 2011. However, this figure deserves every last bit of respect that can be given as it perfectly captures the mystery and sheer brutality of a character that has undergone some pretty big changes in recent years. No longer a goofy looking cartoon character, Black Manta has been transformed into a truly terrifying scourge of the seas - and we applaud the artisans at DC Collectibles for perfectly capturing every last bit of that essence in less than 7" of plastic.

As we said above, Black Manta stands as the best DC Essentials figure to date as it so flawlessly incorporates everything that fans and collectors come to expect from their action figures. Granted, we don't like to sound too over the top in our reviews, but in all honesty, we can't find one thing to complain about when it comes to this figure - and believe us, we looked!

It really is that good!

However, here's hoping that DC will learn from the example of figures like Deathstroke and Black Manta and will continue to give fans more products similar to those, and less like more disappointing entries like Brainiac. DC collectors, like most, are a passionate bunch. But, if you continue to give us figures with a strong mixture of sculpt, paint, articulation and accessories, we see no reason why the DC Essentials line couldn't grow and expand for years to come.

Ever since this line was announced last year at San Diego Comic Con, we've been more than a little excited about it. While we enjoyed the DC Icons line over its three year run, it's really great to see DC Collectibles returning to a classic scale and aesthetic that fans have come to love and appreciate over the last two decades!

Yes, we're still hooked pretty hard on the DC Essentials line, and we can't wait for what's next! Aside from a few multipacks encompassing characters from the excellent Doomsday Clock series, DC will soon be giving us additional waves centered around such characters as Batgirl, Wonder Woman, Supergirl and Harley Quinn - and if they're as strong as what has come before, DC fans are sure to be happy with what's coming up.

And so, in conclusion, we must admit we're loving everything about this new Black Manta figure! It has really set the bar for the future of the line and shown fans what a 7" figure at this price point really should be! Please, DC, follow in the footsteps of this amazing piece and allow this line the full potential it deserves! This is a truly fantastic piece, and we've no doubt that fans will be eager to add this iconic DC villain to their collections - especially as we draw closer to the theatrical release of James Wan's Aquaman.

So, while it may have taken a good four decades for Black Manta to get the respect he deserves, it's clear he's enjoying his new found fame and won't be looking back to the past anytime soon!

And, that's a very good thing indeed!
